Finite element analysis of highly loaded components of a 50 MW steam turbine
This paper presents the results of a three dimensional finite element stress analysis of several highly pressurized and thermally loaded components of a 50 MW steam turbine. The FEM analyses are carried out in the NX Nastran software package for the following components: stop valve casing, cross-over pipes, control valve casing and the rotor disc of the Curtis stage. The resulting linear elastic stress states of these components are investigated for various cases of load combinations. Depending on the component in question, combinations of steam pressure, pre-defined temperature distributions and centrifugal loads are taken into account. Thermal analyses were solved as steady state heat transfer problems. Other types of loads as well as other complexities in the behaviour of the material (e.g. creep) have not been considered in this work.
