Recognition of critically ill patieni in the hospital: patient safety
There is an urgent need for improvement of patient safety in hospital and intensive care unit (ICU). The aim of intansive care medicine is detecting and managing critically ill patients. A failure to appreciate clinical urgency on the wad results in less than optimal care in the time preceding ICU admission, which is a major contributor to ICU mortality. Premonitory signs are present for several hours preceding ultimate deterioration, which provides an opportunity to intervene while condition is still reversible. Rapid response system (RRS) could overcome some problems and improve the management of ICU.
