FE model for composite beam-type structure buckling analysis

This paper presents finite element algorithm for buckling analysis of thin-walled laminated composite beam-type structures. One-dimensional finite element is employed under assumptions of large displacements but small strains. Using non-linear displacement field of cross-section that includes the large rotation effects, the geometric stiffness matrix of thin-walled beam finite element is derived. Stability analysis is performed in an eigenvalue manner and it attempts to determine the critical loads as well as corresponding buckling modes in a direct manner without calculating the deformations. Supposing such approach the lowest eigenvalue is recognised as a critical or buckling load and the corresponding eigenvector represents a corresponding critical or buckling mode. The cross- section mid-line contour is assumed to remain not deformed in its own plane and the shear strains of middle surface are neglected. Laminates are modelled on the basis of classical lamination theory. Computer program is developed and verified trough the few test examples.
