Properties of steel slag aggregates concrete
Up to now, steel slags are well characterized materials in civil engineering applications used mainly as aggregates for road construction and armourstones for hydraulic engineering constructions. Nevertheless, in accordance to the inquiry of the European steel industry, approximately 11% of the produced steel slags are still dumped in Europe where percentage can vary from country to country. In Croatia there are two big unused slag landfills. One landfill contains heterogeneously compounded slag (combination of blast-furnace and electric furnace) and has been spread out on the total area of 25 hectares (in amount of cca 1.5 million tones), while the other one contains slag from the electric furnaces (cca 30 000 tones). The main objective of this paper is to present the possibility of the utilization of these waste materials as aggregates in concrete. This research is part of the wider research project EUREKA! E 4166 on behaviour of concrete elements made with slag from steel industry. Mechanical, fire and durability properties of concrete made with steel slag aggregates from one of the mentioned landfills were experimentally determined and compared to the commonly used crushed limestone aggregate concrete. According to test results it can be concluded that tested slags could be a good substitute for commonly used aggregate brought out of natural resources.
