ICP-AES determination of minor- and major elements in various berries after microwave assisted digestion

Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) was used for the determination of minor and major elements present in cornelian cherries, blueberries, rose hip, and cranberries, as these fruits themselves and/or food stuff prepared from them are of nutritional importance. These berries are rich in sugar, anthocyanins, organic acids, tannins, phenols and antioxidants. All samples were collected in Croatia. Prior to ICP-AES measurement, the dried samples were digested in a closed microwave assisted digestion system. The ICP-AES method was validated and optimized for the determination of selected elements in the different kind of berries. The study was focused on the following elements: Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn. The accuracy of the method was determined by spiking experiments, the recoveries obtained after microwave digestions in whole fruit ranged from 84-123%, 83-101%, 83- 115% and from 79-108% for cornelian cherries, blueberries, rose hip, and cranberries, respectively. The precision, the intermediate precision, the day-to-day reproducibility (< 6.8%), and the overall uncertainty of measurement (approx. 4-10%) for all elements analyzed were up to 2.2%, 5.1%, 7.3%, and from 4-10%, respectively. The limits of detection obtained were all below 4 μg g-1. All berries are rich in K (0.1 up to 4 mg/g) and Mg (0.02 up to 1.2 mg/g). No cadmium, cobalt, and chromium could be detected in all samples. Cupper was found only in cornelian cherries. The contents of iron, manganese, sodium, nickel, lead, and zinc ranged from 2-20 μg/g, 1-250 μg/g, 2-25 μg/g, 13-45 μg/g, 0.3-6 μg/g, and 1-12 μg/g, respectively.
