Behavior of Masonry Columns confined With FRP Strips
The experimental research of masonry columns confined with GFRP strips is described. A total number of 26 specimens were tested: 3 unconfined and 23 confined specimens. The specimens were conventionally and spirally confined. Conventional confinement means that fabric is wrapped horizontally around masonry columns. There were 3 groups of conventionally confined specimens, with different number of fabric layers and with 3 specimens in each group. The pitch in spiral confinement was different for different groups of specimens. There were 5 groups of spirally confined specimens, 4 of them with 3 specimens in the group and one group with 2 specimens. All of used materials: masonry units, mortar, FRP strips were tested too. The test results have shown that all confined specimens have greater load bearing capacity (failure strength) and ductility than unconfined specimens. The compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of spirally confined specimens is usually slightly greater than that for the conventionally confined specimens. The spiral confinement was considerably easier to apply and it would be more acceptable in practical use because it was simpler and easier to tense and glue the strips to the prepared surface.
