In Sity Study of Metal-Insulator Phase transition in Nanophase Vanadium Oxide via simultaneous GISAXS, GIWAXD, GIXR Measurements

Vanadium dioxide single crystals undergo a first order transition from the semiconducting to a metallic state at a temperature of 68oC. The atomic displacements that accompany this phase transformation are small enough to lead to a volume change of approximately 0.044%.These small atomic displacements make this transformation extremely rapid. The fundamental switching time of VO2 lies within the 500 fs duration of the used laser pulse with the films achieving the steady state within 5 ps. The aim of the present investigation is to study via GISAXS, GIWAXD and GIXR the temperature behaviour of vanadium dioxide prior to and after the phase transition temperature at ~ 68.
