European Union Accession Process as a Value Export Mechanism
In light of the prospect European Union enlargement into the Western Balkans, a research on the effects of the pre-accession conditions concerning management of ethnic diversity in (potential) candidate countries that recently went through ethnic-conflicts seems particularly essential. The argument put forward in this paper is that a common democratic political culture exists in the European Union and that it the (potential) candidate countries are expected to embrace its values through accession process. Namely, maintenance of a supra national political entity, such the EU is, requires that similar and consistent values are supported and embraced by its institutions as well as population. Consequently, the EU accession process, that encourages proper accommodation of diverse ethnic groups as well as the post-conflict reconciliation and transitional justice, serves as a value export mechanism.
