Decolourization of Wastewater from Production of Azo Dye by Reduction Method Using Chosen Agents
Coloured wastewater consisting of water-soluble azo dyes can be treated by reduction method. This reductive treatment leads to chemical spliting of the azo bond and smaller molecules of aromatic amines were obtained. In comparison to the parent dye compound, such smaller molecules are mostly colourless and can be more chemically oxidized, adsorbed on carbon, precipitated by polycationic agents and metabolized by microrganisms from activated sludge. In this study, azo dye Mordant Orange 1 (C.I. 14030) was produced in order to characterize obtained wastewater. The wastewater was treated by reduction method using sodium hypophosphite, sodium hypobisulphite and sodium bisulphite combined with sodium borohydride. The effectiveness of reductive treatment using different agents was evaluated on the basis of decreased loading of wastewater, established by percentage of colour removal and values of basic ecological parameters such as COD, BOD and TOC.
