Economic significance of anchorages in managing the coastal area

In this paper the authors present an overview of anchorages in Croatia and explain their significance in economical and ecological terms. Anchorages are one of the most important forms of the nautical infrastructure for pleasure boaters. They are one of the parameters of growth of nautical tourism and have a significant role in managing the coastal area. Besides being a source of income, the conscientiously managed anchorages offer the service of waste and oily waters disposal contributing to reducing significantly sea pollution. This permits also to reduce the number of illegal anchorages lowering in this way destruction of the underwater habitat, grassy meadows of Posidonia Oceanica and dissemination of harmful Caulerpa Taxifolia and Caulerpa Racemosa tropical algae. The authors emphasize the necessity to systematize anchorages, to legalize the non-classified ones, and to take in consideration their management and maintenance through the concession and to introduce a register of anchorages in the single ports and port authorities. Only in this way the maximum financial effects as well as economic benefits of managing anchorages, as significant income from the ports, shall be reached. Particular attention should be paid to the role of the State in promoting concessions allocations, especially in the islands. As a great number of anchorages in Croatia is unprotected, without concession, control or other care of this worthwhile natural resource, the authors plead for their valorization through the institution of concession.
