Removal of Iron Ions Form Water by Using Clinoptilolite-Rich Rock and its Na-Enriched Form: a Kinetic Approach
The present study demonstrates the ability of the clinoptilolite-rich rock (Cp), from Donje Jesenje-Croatia, and its Na-enriched form (Na-Cp) to remove iron ions from acid aqueous solutions. Cp contains the following exchangeable cations Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ and after being treated with 2 M NaCl solution at 70 °C it was converted to a homoionic Na-Cp. The uptake of Fe3+ by the not modified and Na-enriched clinoptilolite-rich rock has been investigated using following conditions: solution concentration of 100 mg/L Fe3+, pH value 1.90, equilibrium time from 30 to 300 min. Different kinetic models were developed to model the Fe3+ uptake by Cp and Na-Cp, based on the first-order kinetics, modified Freundlich and Elovich models, parabolic diffusion and heterogeneous diffusion models. It is shown that developed models described the Fe3+ uptake adequately, with correlation coefficient (R2) ranging from 0.9804 to 0.9954.
