Torsion Response of Symmetric Structures
The observation of buildings subjected to strong earthquakes showed that even symmetric structures could exhibit torsion vibrations. The Seismic Design Code provisions are ensured only by requiring the accidental eccentricity (commonly referred to as accidental structural eccentricity and torsion ground motion). The accidental eccentricity is only a function of plan dimension of the building, and is not related to structure frequencies. Our previous work based on analytical investigation [Raduka, (2005)] has demonstrated that the responses of symmetric buildings submitted to lateral excitation can be significantly influenced by various parameters. It has been shown that unstable self-excited torsion vibration can be induced by lateral vibration, if the structure parameter values are satisfying certain condition. In the context of such results we constrain the number of parameters in this work. The main goal of this work has been to determine the behaviour of real structures, satisfying chosen parameter conditions, during earthquakes.
