WIDENING OF LIBERTY BRIDGE IN ZAGREB
The Sava River divides the Zagreb City into two parts: Old (north) Zagreb and New (south) Zagreb. These parts are connected with several bridges and the Liberty Bridge is the central one. The bridge was built in 1959 and the designer was prof. Tonković. He not only designed the bridge, but also made a study of future urban and traffic development of Zagreb, so that the bridge originally comprises four traffic lanes, two in each direction. It is a steel arch bridge with span of 100 m and composite superstructure. Every detail of the bridge is carefully designed: arch, columns, superstructure, abutments, rails, cornices, lighting... Nowadays, the traffic demands have increased and in the absence of new bridges (and in spite of them) there is a need for widening the bridge. It is a difficult task, because the bridge should remain the same, its appearance, slenderness, lightness etc. must not be jeopardized. On the other hand, the reconstructed bridge should fulfil advanced demands concerning safety of the bridge itself but also of the users. Taking into account all these facts, we tried to find an appropriate solution, and the result is presented in the paper.
