Regression model of slug flow for water-organic solvent system in a microreactor

Intensification of chemical and biochemical processes can be performed in microreactor systems. Segmented flow can be generated in water- organic solvent systems. Because of internal circulations caused by friction among continuous phase/wall of microreactor and the surface of phase segments, mass transfer by convection and conversion rate are much higher. Hydrodynamics of these systems is still very interesting for investigation. The aim of this work was analysis of the slug flow regimes in a system of several organic solvents and water. Experiments with seven organic solvents immiscible with water at different superficial velocities were performed. Lengths of the slugs of organic and water phase were measured. Based on experimental data for slugs length of both, organic and water phase, taking into account physical and chemical characteristic of organic solvents, regression models for prediction of slug length were developed. Developed models can be easily used for prediction of surface area between two phases when biotransformations are performed on interfacial area between organic and aqueous phase. Volumetric mass transfer coefficient has been estimated in glass microreactor with capillary width of 150 μm by carrying out the neutralization experiment with NaOH in experiment where acetic acid diffuses from organic phase (hexane) into water phase.
