TOTAL BETA ACTIVITY IN PM2.5 PARTICLE FRACTION IN ZAGREB ATMOSPHERE
Total beta activity of PM2.5 particle fraction at three sampling sites located at northern, southern and western parts of Zagreb urban area, was investigated. Samples were collected on daily basis during 2005-2007 period and their mass concentrations determined according to HRN EN 14907. Total beta activities of sample aliquots were measured by means of beta counter for low-level activities (GM multi-counter system RISØ) five days after sampling in order to avoid the influence of short half-life radionucleides. Counter calibration was performed by 40K standard. The highest levels of total PM2.5 beta activity [µBq m-3] were measured at north, lower at the south, and the lowest at the sampling site situated at the western part of the town. Although the measurements were performed during three year period only, there is an obvious indication of possible negative trend of activities. Specific total beta activities [Bq g-1] were at the same level for measuring sites located at southern and western parts of Zagreb, while those measured at north of the town were significantly higher. No indication of trend was found at any of sampling sites.
