Phytoplankton assemblages in stratified karstic lakes: response to the environmental stress

The barrage karstic ecosystem of Plitvice Lakes has been well studied from hydrogeological, biological and biochemical point of view, while studies on their algal flora are still scarce. The aim of this contribution is to analyze seasonal dynamics and vertical distribution of the phytoplankton community in order to create a base for better definition of the lakes’ ecological status. The most important parameters affecting phytoplankton abundance and biomass in the lakes studied were phosphorus, nitrogen and water temperature. Trophic classification indicates an oligotrophic status of both lakes, with slight tendency to mesotrophy.
