WELCOME TO ICAME 2013 IN CROATIA

The next International Conference on the Applications of the Mossbauer Effect (ICAME) will be held in Opatija at the Adriatic coast of Croatia between September 1st and 6th, 2013. Croatia is both a Central European and a Mediterranean country, showing geographical and cultural diversities. Croats, originally a Slavic people, come down to the Adriatic Sea thirteen centuries ago and they founded a new homeland. They meet ancient inhabitants the Illyrians, the Romans and the Greek colonists. For many centuries Croatia has been surrounded by different cultures, Italian, German, Hungarian and partially exposed to the Oriental influence through the Turkish presence for a few centuries in South East Europe. The tradition and culture of ancient inhabitants and the neighbouring countries left significant traces in the history of Croatia. Croatia is top touristic destination. In spite of the fact that Croatia is small country its contributions to the science are significant. Thanks to the great prosperity of the Croatian towns along the Adriatic coast and under the influence of Venice and specially the Italian Renaissance many great names in the science appeared. Some of them can be mentioned, such as Marin Getaldić (optics, in Dubrovnik), Marko Antun Dominis (theory of rainbow ; the telescope, in Split) and Faust Vrančić (a famous constructor and engineer, in Šibenik and Padna). Ruđer Bošković from Dubrovnik (the twon often called a pearl of Mediterranean) the greatest name between of them was born in eighteenth century. His concept of the structure of the matter published in a book under the title Theory of Natural Philosophy strongly influenced the development of physic of the time, and we consider that as a most valuable Croatian contribution to the world of science. Our greatest representative in the field of technical sciences is Nikola Tesla, born in the village Smiljan in Croatia. He is a single scientist from all Slavic nations after whom a physical unit tesla was named for magnetic flux. It is impossible to imagine todayʹs world without great inventions of Nikola Tesla. In the twentieth century Lavoslav Ružička of Vukovar and Vladimir Prelog of Osijek were awarded with Nobel prizes for chemistry. One of the prominent Croatian scientist in the 20th century was also Andrija Mokorovičić (Moho discontinuity). In the 19th century bishop Josip Juraj Strosmayer founded the Academy of Arts and Science of all South Slavs (today: Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts) in Zagreb. Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb is the largest institute for natural sciences in Croatia. We welcome you as the participants at ICAME-2013.
