Structure and function of the kidney
The functional unit of the kidney is the uriniferous tubule composed of a nephron and a collecting tubule. The nephron consists of a renal corpuscle and a renal tubule which can be divided in to the proximal tubule, the loop of Henle and the distal tubule. There is a description of various types of nephrons and their various functions. The kidneys are usually the most severely damaged organs in diabetic patients. Major lesions are the glomerular and arteriolar lesions: diffuse glomerulosclerosis, nodular glomerulosclerosis and arteriolosclerosis.
