Cleaner Production Methodology - An Efficient Tool for Waste Minimisation in the Printing Ink Industry

Cleaner production methodology has been applied to the printing ink industry, in order to identify possibilities for waste reduction. Production lines have been analysed according to the technology, equipment and process conditions, identifying sports of waste generation. Special attention has been paid to the water and solvent cycles in terms of consumption, use, re-use and discharge. Waste streams and wastehandling (management) procedures have been analysed and a list of major problems in waste management has been identified. Based on the assessment findings, a list of short and long term measures aimed at reduced of water consumption and waste generation, has been proposed. Highly diluted coloured sludge, originating from the new ecologically sound water-based printing ink production, appeared to be the most problematic waste type. Comprehensive scientific research has been undertaken to investigate possibilities of treatment with cheap, natural materials-bentonites. The investigated process has proven to be very successfu as it allows the bulk of the waste to be discharged as sewage water, leaving just 2.5% of thestarting chantities as hazardous waste. Research results have been used as the base for making an on-site (pilot) technology design. The economic and financial parameters of the proposed pilot plant have been evaluated discussed.
