Ichthyofauna of the lower part of the river Neretva
Icthyological investigation of the delta and tributary of the lower part of the river Neretva resulted with inventory of 34 fish species belonging to 15 families. The most dominant family was Cyprinidae with 14 species, the family Gobiidae with three species and Salmonidae and Mugilidae with two species, and the remaining families were represented by one species. Different habitats have different dominant species but in general the most common species are: Anguilla anguilla, Scardinius erythrophtalmus scardafa, Rutilus basak, Atherina boyeri, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Gambusia affinis, Cobitis taenia narentana, Phoxinellus adspersus, Blenius fluviatilis and Knipowitschia punctatissima croatica. There are no predatory species if we exclude Anguilla anguilla and comparatively rare Salmo trutta. The fish community of Neretva watershed are comprised of 12 endemic fish from the east Adriatic watershed as Chondrostoma kneri, Leuciscus svallize, Leuciscus microlepis, Paraphoxinus adspersus, Rutilus basak, Knipowitschia punctatissima croatica and Salmothymus obtusirostris oxyrhynchus. Introduced alien species are: Gambusia affinis, Ictalurus nebulosus, Carassius auratus gibelio, Lepomis gibbosus and Cyprinus carpio. The Shanon-Wiener diversitiy index for the fish community is 3.731 (log e) from a maximum of 5.044 with an evenness of 0.740. Out of 34 species, 13 are listed the Bern Convention Annex III .
