Application of benthic diatoms in water quality assessment according to the EU-WFD in karstic creeks of Croatia and Hungary

Investigation was aimed to analyze influence of ecological factors on structure and composition of diatoms communities in Croatian continental and Mediterranean carst (Regium Dinaridicum). Procedures and sample dynamics were defined according to CEN-ISO EU. Investigations were conducted in spring/summer period (April-October) when algal communities, according to literature, show growth and biomass maximum. Together with algal sampling, some physical and chemical parameters was measured in situ. Our samples were collected from rivers type 2 and 3 of Hungary (Pannon ecoregion, highland, calcareous, small and medium-sized streams), and type 11 of Croatia (Dinaric ecoregion, continental subregion, karstic- calcareous, highland, small and medium sized streams). Based on preliminary surveys, we selected 5-5 Hungarian and Croatian streams, which are in good ecological status according to their diatom flora. These were: Jósva-patak, Színva-patak, Örvényesi Séd, Egervíz, Köves-patak, Sartuk, Potok Križ, Bijela Rijeka, Crna Rijeka, Izvorišni dio Čabranke. In the case of some streams, several samples were taken from different parts of the streams, in different times. In the case of Jósva stream, samples were taken from Jósvafő, beyond Szinpetri, and beneath Szinpetri ; in the case of Örvényesi Séd, samples were taken at Örvényes and Pécsely. The main purpose of co-operation between two East-Central European countries (Hungary and Croatia) is to continue the former studies and to be more effective in the future investigations. In one hand the common studies create the possibility to evaluate diatom flora of both. In the other hand the results of the ecological valence of the species living in different eco-region with the comparison of species from freshwaters are important on the level of basic science and in connection of EU Water Framework Directives (WFD), too.
