PRrevalence of visceral leishmaniasis among urban dogs in skopje, R. Macedonia
Leishmania infantum is an endemic diseases among canine population in R. Macedonia and as zoonosis plays an important role in public health. In order to estimate the prevalence of this disease among urban population of dogs in Skopje, the capital of R. Macedonia, a total of 410 serum samples were analyzed. An enzyme - linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for the detection of anti - leishmanial IgG. The dogs differed in breed, age, sex and were stray dogs or pets. Hundred and thirteen serum samples (27, 6 %) out of 410 showed positive result, while 297 (72, 44%) were characterized as negative. While the apparent prevalence was estimated as 27, 6%, the true prevalence was 20, 3%. There was no correlation in the prevalence of the disease among male and female animals, neither among stray dogs and pets. The majority of positive dogs (27.4%) were mixed breed. The second dominant breed were German shepherds, with 23.9% positives. Although the dominant breeds accounted for as much as 51, 3% of the whole examined population, no statistically significant differences were found between the prevalence of leishmaniasis in mixed breed or German shepherd dogs compared to other breeds. The dog age at which cases positive for leishmania were diagnosed, ranged between 1 and 12 years. Significant difference (p<0. 01) in the disease prevalence was observed in dogs between 1 and 8 years of age (seropositivity found more frequently). Most of the positive dogs 96.4% were apparently healthy, while 5.3% were symptomatic.
