Two solid state routes to a Schiff base complex using mechanochemistry
Mechanochemical methods such as liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) and ion- and liquid-assisted grinding (ILAG) are effective for the efficient and rapid synthesis of a wide range of metal complexes, which vary from mononuclear species to coordination polymers and metal–organic frameworks. Herein we report two solid state routes for the synthesis of a mononuclear Cu(II) complex with a Schiff base ligand derived from 2-hydroxy-1- naphthaldehyde (napht) and 2-amino-5- methylpyridine (amp). The first approach is a route wherein napht and amp react by neat grinding to form free Schiff base which further reacts with Cu(II) acetate by LAG. The second approach is a route via solid state formation of Cu(II) bis-aldehydate which further reacts with amp to form a final Schiff base complex. All compounds were also prepared by a conventional solution- based method and characterised by means of IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, as well as powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction.
