Overview and Case Study Evaluation of the Time-Frequency Methods for the Estimation of Damping Ratio in Structures
An overview and evaluation of the methods for a damping identification in time-frequency domain with a continuous wavelet transformation using Gabor basic function is provided. The evaluation includes: Cross Section, Impulse Response Recovery using Inverse Continuous Wavelet Transformation, Amplitude modulation, Phase modulation and Morlet-wave damping identification methods. These methods are compared to the traditional modal parameters detection methods in a frequency domain and a time domain. The evaluation of the damping identification method and comparison to the traditional methods is performed on numerically simulated and real laboratory models. The numerical simulation of the damping detection is performed on 2 dof model with weakly and strongly coupled modes. The four different levels of noise are added to a signal in order to evaluate resistance of methods to noise. The practical damping identification is verified on two laboratory models similar to the numerically simulated models.
