Soil acidity and phosphorus status in the northern Bosnia and their improvement by agromeliorations
Soil acidity and low levels of plant available phosphorus are serious limiting factor of field crop yields in the northern Bosnia. For example, more than 60 % of tested samples of Gradiska municipality had soil pH less than 4.5. Also, about 60 % of soils were low in plant available phosphorus. However, potassium status is considerably more favorable because only about 10 % of samples was low i plant available K. Four maize field experiments with increasing rates of P(K) up to 1500 kg P2O5/ha (the exp. I), 1750 kg P2O5/ha (the exp. II), up to 1250 kg P2O5/ha and 1880 kg K2O/ha (the exp. IV) and liming (dolomite up to 20 t/ha – the exp. III) were conducted in area of Gradiska and Kozarska Dubica municipalities in the period from 2004-2008. Triple superphosphate (45% P2O) and NPK 7:20:30 were sources of P(K). The field experiments were conducted in four replicates. As affected by P fertilization (the experiment I) maize yields were increased up to 32 % (2004), 17 % (2005), and 20 % (2006). Under drought stress of 2007 low maize yields and absence response to fertilization were found. Yield increase in the exp. II was 17% (4-year means: 4.30 and 5.02 t/ha, for control and ameliorative P-treatments, respectively). Liming (the experiment III) considerably increased grain yields of maize for 101% (2005), 44 % (2006) and 43 % (2007). In the experiment IV grain yields of maize were increased for 13 % and 15 %, for 2008 and 2009, respectively.
