Russian cartographic activity in Montenegro
Until the mid-19th century, the area of Montenegro was almost exclusively depicted only within the maps of European Turkey where the Montenegrin territory was shown very generally and with a large number of errors as a result of the small scale and insufficient data. The milestone in the mapping of Montenegro will be the arrival of a larger number of Russian cartographers who were the first to enable the development of regional and topographic maps of the territory of Montenegro based on geodetic measurements. In the period between 1860 and 1889, the Russian cartographers produced a series of maps at the request of the Montenegrin government. These maps were made within the frame of the first triangulation-based, systematic survey of the Montenegrin territory.
