Ancestor worship as an identity marker, Phu Tho, Vietnam 2011
Different layers of identity in contemporary Croatian society were discussed through several examples of ancestor or saint worship. Public veneration encompasses the sacral and secular aspects of social life. The place and time of annual celebrations is repeated in cycles from year to year, bringing together the immediate and broader community. Numerous beliefs about and intercessions by the Catholic saints are associated with respect for ancestors. These rituals and customs can be traced at the individual level as well as at the level of the group and small or large communities, and can have a national character. Different forms of social practice on these occasions have a syncretic effect on the community. Any public recognition of such events and phenomena strengthens their importance in general and contributes to successful transfer to the younger generations.
