“Women’s historical narratives between love and pain: ‘Inside, it will be war, safe and empty’”
The article discusses the contribution of Croatian contemporary women writers to the polemical use of the past in public arena.Female conformism and the grandmother’s silencing of tabooed episodes – including the issue of women’s sexuality in times of war violence and political terror - are the main topics of the documentary novel Povijest moje obitelji od 1941 do 1991, i nakon (The History of My Family from 1941 to 1991 and Afterwards) by Ivana Sajko (2009) as well as of the history novel Sonnenschein (2007) by Daša Drndić. The narrative focuses on the family and war, private and public, on the search for love and ignorance towards suffering of others, mediation and repression of traumatic experiences, are observed in the context of antifeminism typical of Croatian mainstream politics of memory but also present in these two radical critiques of women’s trajectories during WWII.
