Trade Orientation and Export Growth in the Mediterranean Countries
One of the main policy changes in the Mediterranean developing countries, as well as in large number of other developing countries, during the late 80s and 90s has been the implementation of the more liberal and opened trade regimes. The aim of this paper is to analyze what are the effects of the outward trade orientation on economic performances, especially export growth. Theoretical grounds of the trade strategies and the relationship between openness and trade performances represent the framework of the further analysis. The empirical analysis is focused on the question whether and to what extend the higher export growth can be linked to the more open and liberal trade regimes. The empirical investigation based on a sample of both developing and developed Mediterranean countries indicates a decrease in export shares in 90s for Mediterranean as a whole, as well as for all groups except non-oil developing countries.
