Excavation of Underground Structure at Wastewater Treatment Plant in Opatija

Placed in urban area of coastal town Opatija, underground structure is designed with large cross-section of 205-220 m2 and total length of 30 m. Maximum overburden is only 11 m. Entire project is one of the most challenging tasks at underground works in Croatia. After verification with numerical model, excavation was executed in five phases. Main excavation method was drill and blast combining both underground and surface blasting technology. Excellent blasting results were achieved with no damage to nearby structures
