Codeswitching in 18th Century Ragusan Comedies
The Ragusan idiom, as it is reflected in 18th century comedies, displays frequent codeswitching between Croatian and Italian, reflecting sociolinguistic functions of the languages involved and characteristics of individual communicative episodes. Various forms of codeswitching require different levels of proficiency and express various communicative strategies and goals. The use of codeswitching is not indicative of any impending language shift, but shows characteristic openness to other languages and cultures.
