In search of practice-friendly science
Three different, comprehensive scientific projects developed and realized by the small team of researchers at the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences in last fifteen years had been focused on studying assessment of needs and risks as well as intervention planning, using both, quantitative and qualitative approaches. Through that time, starting with almost exclusively quantitative approach applied in the project named “Models of interventions aimed to the prevention of behavior disorders of children and youth in Croatia” and moving to the exclusively qualitative approach applied in “Sociopedagogical diagnosis – youth participation in the process of needs assessment and planning the interventions”, we had been searching for the ways to incorporate project results in everyday practice. Dilemmas like: Is the practice science and theory resistant or the science and theory are practice-unfriendly? Do we need to produce more standardized instruments or do they need to start using those that already exists? If we work collaboratively who learns from whom and what? Are those questions exclusively Croatian, or do they have common (international) background?, and similar questions are still our big challenges. From the perspective of our ongoing scientific project “Matching interventions with the needs of children and youth at-risk: creating a model”, financially supported by the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, these dilemmas are very important. We are relying on the idea of changing science trough practice, and so, we are not searching for evidence-based practice, but for the practice-friendly science. So, in this presentation we will focus on describing our trip through quantitative and qualitative approaches and parallel search for practice-friendly science.
