Interactions of acyclic and cyclic polyamines with DNA and RNA
A series of novel cyclic polyamines differing from acyclic derivatives in a number of positive charges, as well as in type and location of heteroaromatic moieties were studied for binding ability to double stranded DNA and RNA. All applied methods (UV/vis, fluorimetric, CD titrations, melting experiments) consistently support binding of cyclic polyamines within the DNA minor groove, while for ds-RNA binding mode is not clearly defined. Both, acyclic (A) and cyclic (B) polyamines reveal pronounced ds-RNA over ds-DNA selectivity, whereby selectivity of cyclic derivatives depends on a core moiety (pyridine vs. phenanthroline).
