Architecture in Rijeka: Art Nouveau Crossroads
A new style trends in the Rijeka architecture at the beginning of the 20th century coincide with the Central European trends. Local designers who during the period from 1900 to 1914 were active in the City, studied in Budapest, Graz, Munich and Venice. The city physiognomy was influenced by the architects’ taste created according to the place of their education. Especially Viennese secession was reflected on Rijeka in many ways. The architectural concept of the Otto Wagner’s School in structural and decorative sense dominates even among architects educated in Budapest, who are in the majority. The influence of Vienna is relentlessly infiltrated through illustrated catalogs that the Rijeka engineers regularly consult.
