Use of portable chlorophyll meter for assessment of nitrogen nutrition of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.)

Portable chlorophyll meter CCM-200 (Opti–sciences, Tyngsboro, MA) could be a valuable tool for forest managers and researchers. It provides rapid and easy assessment of nitrogen nutrition, in both agricultural and forest tree species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of a portable chlorophyll meter to estimate nitrogen (N) content in Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur L.) leaves. Research was conducted on a 3 years old Pedunculate Oak plants. Leaf samples (n=242) were collected during May and July, 2009. Sampled leaves were from 30 to 85 days old, growing on the spring and summer shoots. All plants were fertilized with N, P, K 15-15-15 (1500 kg ha-1) on the 26th of March 2009. Four chlorophyll content measurements (CCI) were collected from each leaf with the CCM-200 portable chlorophyll meter (Opti– sciences, Tyngsboro, MA). Nitrogen content, as percentage of dry weight (Ndw) and nitrogen concentration (Na) in mg per leaf area (mg/cm2), was determined by combustion with CNS elemental analyzer (Leco CNS 2000). Simple linear regression was used to determine the relationship between CCI and Ndw as well as CCI and Na. Nitrogen values for Ndw ranged from 1.75 to 4.63%, while for Na ranged from 0.14 to 0.48 mg/cm2. Chlorophyll content index (CCI) in 242 samples ranged from 8.1 to 40.1 with mean of 21.6 (±6.8). Linear regression was Ndw=0, 0317*CCI+2, 4402 ; R2=0, 1464 and Na=0, 0065*CCI+0, 178 ; R2=0.4874, for P < 0, 001. Correlation analysis indicates that 14% of the variation in Ndw and 48% of the variation in Na can be predicted with CCI. Study results indicate that the CCM-200 is an effective tool for estimation of nitrogen nutrition of pedunculate oak during the growing season, as well as relative health status. Also, it is possible to note the physiological changes over time as a result of fertilization.
