Differences in dispersive movements between Yellow-legged Gulls Larus cachinnans michahellis from northern and middle/southern Croatian Adriatic Coas

Croatian Yellow-legged Gulls are considered to disperse to Adriatic and Danube basin (Isenmann 1973, L’Oiseau et R.F.O. 43, 187-195). Our analyses of 47 recoveries of Yellow-legged Gulls ringed as pulli on Croatian Adriatic islands showed that it is only partially correct, as noticeable difference in dispersion between gulls from northern and central/southern Adriatic Coast were found. Gulls from north Adriatic islands were found in north Adriatic, and further north as in northern Germany and The Netherlands. One bird was found in central Hungary. In contrast, gulls from central and southern Adriatic islands were found in central and south Adriatic, and east to the Danube delta and the Black Sea, except one bird which was found in The Netherlands. Not a single bird from north Adriatic were found in central and south and only one from there was found in southern part of the Italy north Adriatic coast. These differences in dispersal of Yellow-legged Gulls from northern and central/southern Adriatic reveal that two separate populations may exist. The recent increase of numbers of recoveries north from Adriatic is most likely resulting from the fact that almost no gulls have been ringed in the northern Adriatic before 1969.
