Aquaerobic exercise programme improves glycemic control and lipid profile in type 2 Diabetic patients

The health and fitness industry offers a large number of exercise programmes supposedly suitable to diabetic patients. Many of those lack the proven influence on glycemic control and lipid profile and among those that are often recommended is also aquaerobic. The aim was to examine the influence of the six months mediumimpact aquaerobic program, frequency 3x1h/week, on glycemic control and lipid profile in type 2 diabetic patients, N=24, 12M and 12F, age twenty subjects (age 56.1±6.3), all using oral antidiabetic therapy. The intensity of the sessions controlled by self-measured heart rate at three time points during the session programmes increased from average 55% of HRmax to 70%of the HRmax towards the end of the programme. The initial/transitory/ final measurements were conducted. ANOVA for repeated measurements demonstrated following: body weight decreased significantly though there were patients with an increase of the weight (84.48/83.42/82.24 g ; P< 0.05), HbA1c improved (7.58/ 7.23/ 7.05% ; P< 0.001) as well as blood glucose but it was still not satisfactory. Total cholesterol decreased (5.75/5.54/5.45mmol/L ; P< 0.001) mostly due to the LDL decrease with a slight HDL increase. Triglyceride levels improved but responses varied a lot. No hypoglicemic episodes were noticed during or after the workout. The positive glycemic and lipid profile influence and low rate of hypoglycaemia identifies the aquaerobic as the suitable additional therapy in managing type 2 diabetes. With proper hygienic requirements it is especially suitable for patients that are overweight because of the smaller impact forces on the joints involved in the activity.
