A Timing Resolution Model for Scintillating Fibers

A detailed model describing the timing resolution for scintillating fibers is developed for a fully general selection of distributions governing underlying physical principles. Fiber geometry, rate of scintillation decay together with the mean number, spatial dispersion and attenuation of emitted photons is considered. Broadness of the model – achieved by assuming general form of user provided distributions – enables not only the inclusion of scintillating material’s properties but also those of the light detecting devices, such as photon detecting efficiency. The same feature allows physical considerations of varying complexity to be adopted – from a simple meridional approximation to a considerably more refined description of optical processes involved. Therefore, though developed with scintillating fibers in mind, the model is indiscriminately applicable to any kind of light guides. Additionally, the model is extended to include the triggering feature – discrimination of acceptable events based on the number of detected photons at fiber ends, leading to a notable improvement in a timing resolution achieved – experimentally realized by coupling fibers to any photon resolving device. To demonstrate the output of a developed model, a fiber prototype is selected, supplying the required set of parameters and distributions. Following, examples for timing resolution distribution are presented, together with various dependencies for calculated FWHM values. The significance for number of scintillation photons is specially emphasized. Initial measurements performed strongly support the model.
