Fatigue impact on coiled tubing properties
According to recent investigations fatigue is the major factor controlling the service life of coiled tubing. The rate of fatigue damage accumulation is affected by a number of operating factors: mechanical damage, corrosion damage, damage incurred by exceeding the ultimate load capacity of the string, and damage due to cycling plastic strain or fatigue. Some of these factors occur on a random basis that can be observed and quantified. Since the tubing is subjected to the plastic strain when ever it is reeled or un-reeled, damage is being accumulated constantly as the string is used. The rate of accumulated damage is not uniform through the string and because of that it is difficult to predict acceptable working limits. The paper will examine the dynamics of fatigue as it relates to coiled tubing and describe new methods of recording the accumulation of fatigue.
