IKON 3 - Franciscan Iconography

The third volume of IKON – Journal of Iconographic Studies, approaches the theme of Franciscan Iconography. Most of the texts were presented at the Third Conference of Iconographic Studies in Rijeka in May 2009. The conference adjoined the celebration of 800 years of the Franciscan order. On February 24, 1209, Francesco Bernadone having listened to a sermon from Matthew changed his life forever embracing the vow of poverty, thus marking the spiritual formation of the Order of Franciscans. The same year, with eleven of his brothers, he traveled to Rome in order to request permission from Pope Innocent III to found a religious order that soon was to become one of the leading and most popular spiritual communities of Christianity. In the 800 years of its activity the Order has deeply influenced and designated spiritual, cultural and artistic landscape of Europe and the world. The impact of Franciscan thought and theology upon all artistic media has been notably observed from the 13th century, especially in visual arts in which new themes, subjects and iconographic images have been created. The texts in this issue of IKON deal with different subjects concerning Franciscan iconography, theology, hagiography and devotion in order to discuss to what extent did the visual art follow textual models, in what degree did the illustrated word convey symbolic meaning and how did the image comprehend and conform to the particular learning and disputes throughout the history. The themes and subjects discussed refer to the role of image in the Franciscan devotional practice, Franciscan theology and the Christological iconography, new iconographic subjects, attributes and symbols, hagiography and iconography, Franciscan saints, the role and the image of Mother of God within Franciscan devotion, the art and the Franciscan missionary activities worldwide.
