Questioning historical sources: archival and/or commercial
Questions considering the use of historical sources are everyday life for ethnomusicologist dealing with any research theme. Their heterogeneity, multiple connectivity and different use are a challenge in defining approach to the theme in mind. By looking at traditional music performances in public, as well as private, occasions in Hrvatsko zagorje, region in northwestern part of Croatia, I will try to display different views. Multiple interpretations of historical sources can be observed by looking at the way social occasions (public and private ones) are formed ; in example, in local repertoire of region festivities, festivals and cultural or art gatherings. A few examples from the field research will show that historical layering is not the same for the scientists /researchers and the inhabitants of a region which lead to juxtaposition of the archival documents and commercial recordings made in the middle of the 20th century. This paper is based on questioning historical sources, as well as questioning historical layers of traditional music and the representation and the interpretation of cultural heritage today.
