Roman votive bronze figurines from the Region of Istria (Croatia)

The Roman bronze figurines from the Region of Istria (Xth Italian region Venetia et Histria) have a votive character. One of the features of Roman culture were bronze figurines that were added to the shrines of the deities. Very often thay were used as decoration of small household shrines in private dwellings, Roman residential and rural villae. They represented different Roman official deities as well as patron spitits of ancestors in the form of boys and men. Mankind always directed vows towards the sublime powers, praying for health, happiness, love and prosperity, and were directly concerned with these spheres of life, in daily occurrences during the period of Roman civilization. With the quick expansion of the Roman State, Roman religion adopted numerous other foreign cults in addation to Greek and Egyption gods, and so we ancounter the figurine of the Egyptian goddess Isis united with the Roman goddess Fortuna. The majority of these figurines such as Jupiter, Junona, Minerva, Venus Anadyomene, Hercules, Fortuna, Dionysus, Apolo, Genius and figurine of youngsters, wrestler, and the priest stem from the pagan period of the Roman Empire.Bronze figurines of deities were manufactured in large numbers, and had an easily recognizable, similar pattern that often imitated some wellknown large statue made by ckassical Greek sculptors like Venus Anadyomene. They were sold in large quantities throughout the Roman Empire and thus mainly from Aquileia toIstria Region. The selection of bronze figurines comprises objects made in the period from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD.
