Calcium chloride and calcium bromide in Allium test, Lemna test and their effect upon peroxidases in Avena coleoptiles
Calcium chloride and calcium bromide solutions as well as 1:1 mixture of them are commonly used in oil industry as "high density brines". Allium test is a sensitive method for the assessment of cytotoxic effects caused by chemical treatments. Calcium chloride and calcium bromide solutions and a 1:1 mixture in 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% (v/v) caused a significant reduction in mitotic activity and appearance of abnormal mitoses on Allium ascalonicum L. root tip meristem. The same solutions treatment of Avena coleoptiles showed considerably higher peroxidase activity than in the control. The effect on Lemna minor growth was monitored by counting the number of fronds after two week incubation period and by taking the fresh weights of the plants. In this test, a significant effect, especially of calcium bromide, was noticed.
