Roman _Ragtime_ i američka popularna kultura u kategorijama frankfurtske škole
E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime and American Popular Culture in the Frame of Frankfurt School Concepts E.L. Doctorow's widely acclaimed novel Ragtime (1975), praised by critics and the public alike, dramatizes early twentieth-century United States, or the era of ragtime (a popular musical mode, a precursor of jazz). Concomitantly, the era is marked by the rise of film as a preeminent form of mass culture, while the conjoining of the two forms, music and film, also marks the origin of American, and global, popular culture. At the outset, the culture of ragtime, however, is rent with contradictions that in the novel are presented through a polyphonic perspective, comparable to syncopation in ragtime or montage in film. Another contradiction underlying the novel's structure is located at the intersection of history and fiction and examined under the heading of „historiographic metafiction“. The novel's multiple perspectives and intersecting plots correspond to the dynamic and portentous development of the culture industry, which brings us next to the influence of the Frankfurt school on the examination of the scope, impact and ramifications of some functions and forms of the culture industry. The representative Frankfurt School scholars providing categories for analysis are Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Walter Benjamin and Jürgen Habermas. Based on their rather critical assessment of mass culture in an exemplary modern industrial society of the United States of America, the various plotlines of the novel are considered both as reflections on the illusions and failures of modernity but also as viable cultural and ideological props for collective imaginaries.
