Wide area monitoring algorithm using multi phasor data concentrator model
The paper describes the custom developed phasor data concentrator model for data acquisition, processing and visualisation in the wide area monitoring system (WAM) for the Croatian transmission system operator(TSO) HEP. The Croatian power system makes part of a very well meshed interconnected European UCTE (Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity) power system. Croatia is situated at the eastern part of the interconnection in that way making a link for energy transit from north-eastern to south-western parts of Europe. For security reasons enhanced monitoring and control of loadability of main 400kV corridors is required. Implementation of the WAM system was necessary to contribute to the optimization of power flow by monitoring a 400kV overhead power line connecting two significant substations. This first pilot project contributed in energy transit optimization without violating the voltage stability risk. After the successful experience of the first WAM system the next step was the extension with new PMUs to achieve the complete observability of the 400kV transmission network with frequency and phasor recordings of all 400kV nodes. The device at the highest level of hierarchy in the WAM system, commonly known as the Phasor data Concentrator (PDC) has the function to gather data from all the PMUs, reject bad data, align the time-stamps and create coherent record of simultaneously recorded data from the observed parts of the power system. In accordance with this, the first WAM interface for the Croatian TSO was realized with a commercially available of – the – shelf application. As the experience in the WAM system grew, some drawbacks of the current system and new requirements for a more open and adoptable system arise. According to this, the current system architecture was additionally equipped with a new commercially available PDC from a different vendor, with new characteristics and additional applications than the adjacent one. The new PDC ensured the availability of applications defined and made by the user and applied to the specific power system and its characteristics. The two PDC are put into parallel operation, gathering data from same PMUs. This paper describes the enhanced architecture of the Croatian WAM system with parallel operation several PDCs, comprising of real time acquisition of phasor measurements into different central units with different applications (phase angle calculation, modal analysis, voltage stability…) and completely configurable and custom made interface for different user types.
