The prevalence of genital and ocular chlamydial infections in Rijeka area
Objectives: Infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis serovars D-K are among the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infections in the world. Genital chlamydial infections are associated with a wide range of chlamydial diseases ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe complication including epididymitis, PID and infertility. Ocular chlamydial infections in adults mainly originate from a primary genital infections. The most common clinical manifestation is follicular conjunctivitis and in contrary to trachoma is not blinding disease. The aim of study is to establish the frequency of C.trachomatis in genital and ocular clinical samples (in bothe sexes), during the eights years period (1992-1999). Patients and methods: The study was performed retrospectively on three group of patients. 1) females attending the Outpatients' Center mainly because of suspected genital tract infection, abnormal Papanicolau smears, infertility, miscarriage and partner control. 2) males suffering from NGU, PGU, prostatitis, infertility, Sy.Riteri and partner control. 3) adults and school-children with conjunctivitis, more often follicularis including their household members. The treatment check up persons were excluded from this study. The genital (endocervical and urethral) and ocular specimens were tested fro the presence of C.trachomatis using monoclonal antibodies to C.trachomatis (Orion, Chlamyset). Results: C.trachomatis was found in 1410 (21.87%) out of 6447 persons enrolled in this study. Out of 5335 genital specimens 1179 (22.0%)were positive. C.trachomatis was detected in 814 (20.21%) of 4027 endocrevical swabs and in 365 (27.9%) out of 1308 urethral swabs of males. Out of 1112 examined ocular smears, C.trachomatis was found in 231 (20,8%) cases. The same percentage of C.trachomatis positive ocular smears was detected in both sexes (females 20,67% and males 20.7%). Conclusion: During the eight years period the total number of examined, as well as C.trachomatis positive samples, have shown steady decline from the beginning of investigated period, with the lowest figure in the year 1994. From that year both numbers have shown increasing trend. Female patients were generally dominated in this examination. Consequently, the number of detected C.trachomatis among females was generally higher than in males, both in genital and ocular specimens. However, the percentage rate of C.trachomatis positive tests was higher in genital samples of males in comparison to females.
