Morphological Changes in Segmented Polyurethanes under Thermal Treatment
Segmented polyurethane elastomers with approximately 50wt % of hard segment content were studied.Morphological changes induced in these polyurethanes by annealing and quenching were investigated. The morphological changes were followed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) as well as by static meshanical measurements. The annealing process caused increased mixing of hard and soft segments. The positions of the endotherms were changed as well as the Tg's of PUR.This was reflected in the shifts of the loss moduli and storage moduli. This indicates that the domain morphology is affected by thermal treatment. There are also changes in mechanical properties. The hard and soft segment ordering results in annealing endotherms that depend on the type of PUR, annealing temperature and the time following the quench.
