Challenges of psychological assessment of persons with intellectual disabilities

Modern approach to persons with intellectual disabilities modifies the classic psychodiagnostic approach into a complex process diagnostics in which the results of intellectual ability assessment make only the first step in planning support. Because og the specific limitations in children/persons with intellectual disabilities, the choice of diagnostic tools is restricted compared to the average population. Therefore, proper choice of measuring instruments and making an accurate diagnosis require due experience and knowledge of the psychology of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Besides determinig the level of development of cognitive functions and learning ability, psychological assessment also covers the field of mental health, play, behaviour in test sutuation, executive functions and relationship with parents.
