Integration of the Pilot Wind Farm in The Electric Grid of an Island
Despite considerable natural resources and a generally positive public attitude for renewables, the investors interest for wind projects in Croatia was rather small because of the lack of any systematic policy or incentive measures for gradual inclusion of renewables in the energy sector of Croatia. Besides, Croatian energy sector is facing major changes and reorganisation leading from the current monopoly position of the state owned utilities to liberalised and open energy market in the future, making things additionally uncertain. Currently, renewables are seen rather from the strategic point of view then as a high-pressure energy need. Therefore Croatian government launched several national energy programs referring to renewables and energy efficiency, among which one is the ENWIND Wind Energy Utilisation Program. It was find out that considerable wind potentials lie in the littoral region, especially islands of Croatia. But, high wind energy share in the local (island) electric network could cause a problem, which is defined by the quality standards for the electric energy supplied. The paper will present ENWIND goals, first results and future prospects, as well as research results on the determination of the wind farm rated power that could be fed into the distribution network at a specific network point for which a new algorithm was developed. The results of the case study on pilot wind farm integration into the electric system of Croatia will be presented, too.
