Modification of the commercial nanofiltration membrane

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are widely used in water softening applications mainly because of their high water flux and good rejection of divalent salts which makes them economic in these processes.However, their highly porous and generally hydrophobic selective layer facilitates the transport of organic solutes thus often resulting in inadequate removal of, for example pesticides, pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds, which limits their practical use. In this study commercial nanofiltration membrane NF270 was modified with polyvinly alcohols of different molar masses and afterward cross-linked with maleic acid. Modified membrane proved to be hydrophyilic and in comparison with virgin membrane its rejection of pesticides has been increased from 60 to 90 %.
